Identifying common crawling insects at home

Crawling insects are everywhere. They can be difficult to deal with when you have an infestation in your home. Crawling insects make their way inside mostly during summer through cracks in the foundation and openings in the walls and windows. Common places you will find them at home include the floor drains, closets, basements, bathrooms, kitchen pantry, and so on. While some crawling insects are unhygienic and harmful, others constitute a nuisance in the home.

No matter the types of crawling insects you have in your home, the best way to get rid of them is to call on professionals to solve the problems. In this article, you will find common insects at home and how you can identify them.

Common Types of Crawling Insects

  1. Cockroaches

Cockroaches exist in about 3500 species, but they all have similar traits. Roaches are one of the most dreaded crawling insects in the home because they carry bacteria that contaminate food. They are creepy and irritating and mostly found in unclean places.

Cockroaches can be black, red, or brown, usually with two antennae, flat body, and oval-shaped. They have fast reproduction, so the infestation is quite fast. An adult female cockroach can lay 35-40 eggs per time, and the eggs hatch in 2-7weeks.

They like moisture and damp areas; once you spot cockroaches in your home, call pest control services for immediate inspection and help. To prevent cockroaches t home, keep your space clean and seal all openings that serve as entry points into the house.

  1. Earwigs

This is another crawling insect that you should watch out for at home. Earwigs have flat and slender bodies with a pair of pincers and antennae. Earwigs are mostly wingless; you will find them in dark places and under garbage. They are nocturnal, so you will mostly see them feeding on waste, plants, and other tiny crawling bugs at night.

They also like moist and unventilated areas outdoors. You can prevent this outdoor pest from your home by cleaning and sweeping the floor regularly. They are not mostly found indoors but using a dehumidifier at home to keep the environment dry can prevent earwigs indoors.

  1. Ants

Ants are one of the most annoying crawling bugs. Ants exist in different species and sizes; you will find them almost everywhere. Ants have segmented bodies, and they appear in black or brown color. Ants are scavengers; they eat and feed on anything from fruits to seeds, other insects, garbage, sweets, and so on.

Ants also like damp places, so their nest is usually located under the buildings, near trees, or along the foundation. They enter the house through open windows, doors, foundation crevices, and so on. Some ants can bite and sting, although most home-invading ants don’t bite.

Some natural repellants for ants are a cream of tartar, chili pepper, and pure cinnamon. DIY isn’t 100% effective, like sealing your windows with silicone caulks. In case you have an ant infestation, call on professionals immediately.

  1. Silverfish

The silverfish insect has a fish-like shape with metallic and silvery colors. Silverfish are wingless crawling insects with antennae-like tails. They move very fast and are mostly found in moist places at home. You will find them in rayon, linen, paper, and book bindings at home. Silverfish can live in a house without food or water for a long time.

To prevent silverfish, repair all leaking pipes and drains at home. You can also use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture. Lastly, seal your food properly at all times.

  1. Spiders

Spiders are not really categorized as insects, but you will see them crawling and making webs around the house. They have two body parts divided into the abdomen and cephalothorax. Even though spider helps to control pest naturally at home, their sight is irritating. Spiders don’t move in groups, so dealing with each of them isn’t so difficult. You can use the vacuum to clear the spider and its web. Also, use the yellow bug light outside the house instead of the white light to reduce insect attraction to the house. Also, ensure that all exterior entry points are sealed to prevent spiders indoors.

  1. Stink bugs

Stink bugs are broad-bodied crawling bugs with six legs and wings. They don’t bite or sting humans but release foul and unpleasant smells when frightened or crushed. They don’t pose any health risk to humans but constitute a nuisance at home.

Stink bugs enter your home through openings in the wall and like to dwell in cozy places. Stink bugs feed mostly on plants, making them more of an outdoor pest. They can take over your house because they have a fast reproduction rate. İf you notice stink bugs in your home, call professionals to get rid of them.

  1. Termites

Termites are insects with four wings, usually brown, black, or yellow bodies. Termites are destroyers and can cause damage to your house in a very short time without you knowing. They eat through your house’s wood, door posts, and beams. Termite infestation causes structural damage at home as they feed on dead woods, mulch, roots, stumps, logs, and untreated sides. You can suspect the presence of termites at home when you see mud tubes, bubbling paint, or discarded wings around. Termites eat wood fast, so you must call on a professional immediately if you notice any at home. They are social insects; you will need experts to locate and destroy their nests. You can prevent termites at home by storing wood piles away from the foundation.
