Get rid of oriental cockroach

How to get rid of oriental cockroaches from your home? Let’s read this article written by our professional team.

What are oriental cockroaches?

The oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis), often known as the waterbug or black beetle (because of their predominantly dark bodies), is a big cockroach species with mature males measuring 18–29 mm (0.71–1.14 in) and adult females measuring 20–27 mm (0.79–1.06 in). It has a glossy body and is dark brown or black in colour. The female is a little different from the male in, and she appears to be wingless at first glance; however, she is brachypterous, with non-functional wings right below her head. Her body is larger than the males. The male has long brown wings that cover three-quarters of the abdomen, as well as a thinner body. They are both unable to fly.

Where oriental cockroaches like to hide?

Climbing on smooth, vertical surfaces is nearly impossible for Oriental cockroaches; therefore, if you notice a giant roach crawling high up on a wall or cupboard, it’s probably not an Oriental cockroach.

Oriental cockroaches aggregate in great numbers indoors, especially in chilly, dark, and moist environments. Look for them in regions where there is a lot of water like:

  • Basements that are wet
  • Crawl areas
  • Drains on the floor
  • Under the sinks
  • In the vicinity of washing machines

They also love moist environments outside. Examine the following locations in and around your home and garden.

  • Leaf piles
  • Cisterns
  • Covers for the ground
  • Dumping sites and garbage cans

When there isn’t any water available, Oriental cockroaches will try to get inside through a low-level entry, such as a door or an air duct, dryer vent, or garbage chute. Oriental cockroaches rely on filth and rubbish, and while they can go a month without food, they can only be alive for a few weeks without water.

How to control oriental cockroaches infestation?

Oriental cockroaches are mostly an outdoor species that can be found in sewers, as well as under waste, leaves, stones, and firewood. These bugs can also be found living in the voids or openings beneath porches. Oriental cockroaches tend to penetrate homes throughout the summer, despite their normal habitat being outdoors. They will get access to buildings through door thresholds, sliding glass doors, utility pipelines, and floor drains. Oriental cockroaches love damp, cool environments indoors, so they seek refuge in basements and crawl spaces. Cockroaches are also known to crawl around toilets, sinks, pipes, and service ducts.

Because they are so reliant on water, they like to congregate in big groups around water sources.

Prevention Methods

Limiting their access to the inside of your house, as well as to food supply and water supply, can help in keeping Oriental cockroaches out of your home.

Try these tips:

  • Store garbage and the food in containers with tight-fitting lids.
  • Clean regularly with the help of a vacuum.
  • Fix leaky sinks, drains, pipes and other different plumbing issues.
  • Cap the drain traps properly.
  • Seal off any entry points from outside( if it is possible) with caulk door sweeps, or weather stripping.
  • Clear away wet leaves, damp mulch, and water-soaked debris from your foundation.
  • Create a secondary bug barrier outside with an application of pesticides (exterior perimeter spray with commercial chemicals strongly recommended).

Are oriental cockroaches harmful?

Oriental cockroaches are, in fact, dangerous. Oriental cockroaches can carry the bacteria on their legs and bodies, just like other cockroach species. As they wander around your house on various items, including food, they can contaminate whatever they come into contact with, potentially spreading E. coli and salmonella from one food source to the next.

Cockroaches have also been linked to allergic responses and the worsening of asthma in certain persons.

Don’t you want to know how to get rid of oriental cockroaches the right way? If you suspect your home has an oriental roach infestation, get a registered pest control professional to do an inside and exterior assessment and establish an oriental cockroach treatment plan with you. A pest control technician might ask about any standing water or particularly wet parts of the property that could attract and support oriental cockroach infestations. They’ll probably look for waste or expired food as well.

Insecticides and chemicals for oriental cockroach control

Gel Bait

Gel baits might be a good approach to get rid of cockroaches. This is why pest control professionals frequently employ them. These gels include a variety of insecticides and are packed in a convenient syringe. Small amounts of the gel can be applied with this syringe anywhere where roaches hide, such as cracks and crevices. The roaches will devour the gel bait and then die quickly.

The nicest part about gel bait is that it can kill multiple generations of cockroaches when combined with specific insecticides. Roaches eat one other’s corpses and wastes, allowing poisoned and dead insects to spread the insecticide to living insects.

Fumigation

Cockroaches are reported not to be able to resist the combination of residual spray and ULV 110 oil base fogging treatment.

In case of using non-professions / commercial baits / sprays few roaches will survive, their fast rate of reproduction means they can multiply quickly. Before you know it, you’ll be right back where you started!

Boric Acid

Boric acid is one of the most often used for cockroaches treatment products. It’s usually sprayed as dust that’s strewn over the house and blown into gaps and crevices where cockroaches hide. The powder coats the roaches as they crawl across these surfaces. When they preen their legs and antennae, they will eat it. Because boric acid is essentially indestructible as long as it is kept dry, it is an excellent long-term roach control option.

Avert cockroach bait (commercial product)

Avert Cockroach bait is a highly effective bait for cockroach eradication. This cockroach bait is not a publicly sold product and your pest control professional may use it to eliminate your cockroaches. When living roaches come into contact with the faeces and dead corpses of poisoned insects, they are getting poisoned as well, just like the baits indicated above. As a result, commercial products (used by pest control technicians)  vs publicly sold insecticide are extremely effective, killing up to three generations of cockroaches without giving a chance for future cockroach multiplication.
